Xinjiang Oilfield Takes the Lead in Constructing Carbon MRV Technology System

On January 20, the reporter was informed that after two years of promoting construction, Xinjiang oilfield has built a carbon MRV technology system, carbon emission reduction accounting standards have filled the gaps in the industry, and promoted the standardization and scientific carbon statistics monitoring system.

MRV technology system includes three components: monitoring, reporting and verification. Xinjiang Oilfield Experimental Testing Research Institute has overcome the three major difficulties of "lack of data, lack of instruments and lack of methods", and established four types of carbon emission source monitoring technologies for natural gas fields: laser methane monitoring, fixed roof tank breathing gas monitoring, vortex correlation flux monitoring, carbon dioxide injection and production detection. It provides quantifiable and verifiable technical means for carbon emission intensity in oil and gas production.

The researchers of the institute went deep into the site, proposed a set of carbon accounting data quality control methods from energy consumption, equipment, metering instruments, laboratory reports, production and other information data, and built an oilfield carbon verification system, and Xinjiang oilfield achieved a breakthrough in carbon monitoring, reporting, verification (MRV) technology system "zero".

In 2023, the Institute of Experimental Testing actively expanded the carbon audit business, did a good job in the traceability, cross-check and quality assessment of various emission source data, accurately described and established the carbon emission source spectrum of three typical oil and gas production processes for the first time. Based on the actual production of thin oil, heavy oil and natural gas, research on local accounting standards has been carried out, and technical specifications for unit carbon emission accounting of oilfield plant (office) level have been formulated. Led the development of local carbon emission reduction accounting standards for the first CCUS (Carbon capture, utilization and Storage technology) project in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. After two years of efforts, six draft standards including "Gas chromatography Method for Determination of carbon dioxide Content in Produced Gas from Carbon dioxide flooding reservoirs" were formed, covering three fields of carbon monitoring, carbon accounting and carbon evaluation.
